About
Sea Position is from a series of prints that were informed by drawings and prints of archival images of Margaret Morris Movement dancers. MMM is a dance, posture, relaxation and breathing system devised by the pioneering artist, dancer and choreographer Margaret Morris in the early 1900’s, and is still practiced internationally today. Jenny has recently began learning MMM, and has also been researching into the ideas of freedom, creativity, empowerment and flexibility within the body that the method promotes.
Process
This unique print was made using the process of hand cutting individual shapes from rhenalon plates and printing in a monoprint style through the intaglio press. The print also uses a chine collé paper throughout the series. In this case, the paper is an archival image of Margaret Morris dancers in position c.1930/40’s. Chine collé is the process of hand cutting paper shapes which are glued and pressed into the surface during the printing process.
This print was printed on an Italian FOME intaglio press at Jenny Steele’s studio at Rogue Artist’s Studios in Manchester, UK.
